What is the employee turnover rate?
Also known as: Attrition rate, Staff turnover.
The employee turnover rate is the share of a workforce that leaves over a period, worked out as the number of leavers divided by the average headcount for that period and read as a percentage, often split into voluntary and involuntary departures.
Turnover is a rate, not a count, so it only means something against a headcount and a period. Annualising a monthly or quarterly figure makes periods comparable, and separating voluntary from involuntary leavers usually tells you more than the headline.
There is no universal good number: healthy turnover depends on the industry, the roles and the stage of the company. A calculator gives you the rate from your own counts; what it means is a judgement for you, not a benchmark to import.
