What is an HRIS?
Also known as: Human Resource Information System.
An HRIS, a Human Resource Information System, is the software that holds your organisation's employee records and runs the core processes around them: people and org data, time off, documents, onboarding and reporting.
The HRIS is the system of record for a workforce. It keeps one authoritative copy of who works where, on what terms, and it carries the everyday workflows that touch that record, a joiner being onboarded, leave being requested and approved, a document being signed, a report being pulled.
The term is often used interchangeably with HRMS and HCM, and the boundaries are not strict. In practice an HRIS is the core record and the processes immediately around it, while HRMS and HCM describe wider suites built on top of that core.
