Revenue per employee calculator

Revenue and headcount in, and out comes revenue per employee, with profit per employee too if you add a profit figure. Your currency, your headcount, no benchmark.

A label only. Nothing here converts between currencies.

Average over the period. Full-time equivalents give a cleaner figure if you have a lot of part-time staff.

Leave blank to skip. Enter a profit or operating income figure to also get profit per employee.

How the answer is worked out

Every step, in the open, so you can rebuild it in a few spreadsheet cells and disagree with it if you want to. A calculator you cannot check is an ad.

Revenue per employee

Revenue per employee is the revenue for the period divided by the average headcount over that period. Five million across 50 people is 100,000 each. Keeping the two figures on the same period is the whole discipline: annual revenue against an annual average headcount, or a quarter against that quarter's average, never one against the other.

Profit per employee

If you enter a profit figure, the tool also divides it by headcount for profit per employee, which strips out the cost of producing the revenue and is often the more honest productivity read. It accepts a negative profit, in which case profit per employee is negative too, because a loss spread across a team is still a real per-head figure.

Headcount is your definition

The tool divides by whatever headcount you give it. A raw headcount and a full-time-equivalent count can differ a lot in a team with many part-time or contract staff, and neither is wrong, but they answer slightly different questions. Pick one, use it consistently across periods, and the trend will be comparable even where the absolute number is arguable.

What this tool does not know

What good looks like. Revenue per employee varies enormously by sector, by business model and by how much work is outsourced rather than staffed, so this tool holds no benchmark and no typical figure for anyone. A software firm and a staffing agency are not comparable on this measure, and a made-up median would only mislead.

It is one ratio, not a verdict on productivity, and it says nothing about how the revenue was earned. To read what a hire costs alongside it, use the cost per hire calculator and the employee cost estimator. For the wider picture, see the guide to HR metrics for small teams.

Questions with complete answers

How is revenue per employee worked out?

It is the revenue for the period divided by the average headcount over the same period. If you also enter a profit figure, the tool divides that by headcount for profit per employee. Both figures and the arithmetic behind them are shown in the working.

Should I use headcount or full-time equivalents?

Either, as long as you are consistent. A raw headcount counts every person; a full-time-equivalent count converts part-time and contract staff into their share of a full-time load, which gives a cleaner productivity figure where a lot of people are part-time. Pick one definition and keep it the same across periods so the trend is comparable.

What is a good revenue per employee figure?

There is no honest single answer, so this tool will not invent one. It varies by sector, by business model and by how much of the work is outsourced rather than staffed. A software company and a professional-services firm sit in completely different ranges. Comparing your own figure across periods is far more useful than any benchmark.

Can I use it for profit per employee only?

Yes. Enter your revenue and headcount for revenue per employee, and add a profit figure whenever you want profit per employee as well. The profit field accepts a negative number, so a loss-making period still gives you a real per-head figure. Leave it blank and the profit lines simply do not appear.

Is anything I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. It computes in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere. There is no email wall, no account and no storage. The link button carries your figures in the address itself, and revenue figures are sensitive, so share that link carefully.

A ratio is a moment. The headcount behind it is a record worth keeping.
