How the answer is worked out

People being managed
Everyone who is not a manager is treated as being managed, so the number of people being managed is the total headcount minus the managers. In a group of 60 with 10 managers, that is 50 people reporting in. It is a deliberately simple model: it does not try to know who reports to whom, only how the whole group splits.
Average span of control
The average span is the people being managed divided by the number of managers: 50 across 10 managers is a span of 5. It is the single figure most often meant by span of control, the typical number of direct reports a manager carries, and it falls as you add managers to the same headcount.
The share who manage
Alongside the span, the tool shows managers as a percentage of the whole group. Ten managers in 60 people is about 17 percent. A high share who manage, or equivalently a low span, is the shape people mean by top-heavy, and reading the two figures together says more than either alone.
What this tool does not know
The right span. There is no correct number, and this tool asserts none: a team doing complex, varied work needs a smaller span than one doing standardised work, and the same span can be healthy in one function and stretched in another. It gives you the ratio, not a judgement on whether it is right for your work.
It is a flat ratio, not an org chart. It does not know your reporting lines or how many management layers you have, and a group with the same span can be one layer deep or several. Questions with complete answers
How is span of control worked out here?
The people being managed are the total headcount minus the managers, and the average span is that number divided by the manager count. The tool also shows managers as a share of the whole group. Every line is in the working so you can check it.
Who should I count as a manager?
Anyone with at least one direct report. The tool treats everyone else as being managed, which is the assumption behind a flat average. If some people manage projects but nobody reports to them, leave them out of the manager count, because they do not carry a span in the sense this figure measures.
What is a healthy span of control?
There is no single right answer, so this tool will not invent one. Spans that work well range widely depending on how complex and varied the work is, how experienced the team is and how much the manager also does hands-on. Reading your own span across teams and over time is more useful than any benchmark a web page could assert.
Does this show my management layers?
No. It is a flat ratio for one group, not an org chart, and it cannot tell whether your people sit under one layer of managers or several. Two organisations with an identical average span can have very different depth. Use it as one input into how your structure is shaped, not as a map of it.
